Monster-In-Law: Maria Theresa, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg

Maria Theresa, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, was usually admired for her grace and poise, especially as a relative outsider in royal circles. Maria Theresa was born in Cuba and was one of the first commoners and non-European to marry into this tight circle. She paved the way for future married ins, like Maxima Zorreguieta, Mary Donaldson and Meghan Markle.

After her mother-in-law, Josephine Charlotte of Belgium, suffered a stroke, Maria Theresa revealed that when she married Henri, heir to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, she faced ill treatment at her hands. Supposedly, Josephine Charlotte was racist against Maria Theresa's Cuban heritage. She called the press to an off the record meeting where she sobbed for hours at the abuse she faced. Her husband, Henri, has supposedly supported her against his parents. It was whispered that Josephine Charlotte was elitist so many were not shocked by these revelations and sympathized with Maria Theresa.

However, it has recently come out that Maria Theresa may be a rather unlikeable person herself. Earlier this year, Jeannot Waringo released a report he compiled over the past year regarding the Luxembourg Court. It is believed that Mr. Waringo compiled this report at the direction of the Prime Minister, who was tipped off by palace staff. It is claimed that Maria Theresa acts like a dictator, with everyone from her husband to staff acquiescing to her whims. Allegedly, the current Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, stood up to Maria Theresa, which caused a souring relationship between the Court and the Government. Between 2014 and 2019, 51 of 110 total staff resigned or were fired. Staffers had terrible anxiety, suffered illness and could not stand the insane pressure applied by Maria Theresa. The prosecutor's office has even opened an investigation into the claims of physical abuse by Maria Theresa.

After this information was revealed, many people speculated about Maria Theresa's treatment of her family. The Luxembourg children and their spouses were considered work shy. Many were especially unhappy with heir Guillame and his wife, Stephanie, who even absconded for a year to London. This year, after six years of marriage, it was finally revealed they were expecting an heir, after suffering from infertility. Some speculate that Maria Theresa's overbearing personality may have exerted extreme pressure on her son and daughter-in-law.

Maria Theresa's second son, Felix, and daugher-in-law, Claire Lademacher, have chosen to live close to her family and away from the Luxembourg Court. Furthermore, her former daughter-in-law, Tessy Antony, has also alluded to a less than pleasant relationship with her former in-laws. As they say, when there's smoke, there's fire.
